Left Field NYC Pocket and Rat Tail Vintage Hair Combs

Take one look at Left Field NYC (or just listen to their founder speak) and it’s clear what they stand for – US manufacturing, superior (read: vintage) production techniques, and a deep appreciation for 1950’s Americana style. Though many here may be more familiar with their range of raw denim options–including the more recent heavyweight 18 oz. Collect Mills denim–we’ve seen the Queens-based brand apply their craft to other facets of clothing.

Case in point: their new set of combs. Available in two styles and four colors, Left Field sought inspiration from the 1950’s greaser culture; a period where one’s hair was their best accessory and as such, a sturdy and well-balanced comb was an essential everyday carry item. In true form, Left Field tapped a US-based supplier, the “Unbreakable Factory”, that has been producing quality combs for more than sixty years.

Turning more to the specs, the basic Pocket Comb measures 5″ long, features two sets of teeth with differing thickness, and is offered up in black or tortoise for $3 per. For those needing a hair part, the Rat Tail Comb comes with an extended 3.5″ tail-like section and is available for $5 per in black or teal.

Left Field NYC’s Tapered Charles Atlas Fit

Do you like the roomy top block of Left Field NYC’s Greaser cut but the tapered hem of their Chelsea? Well you are in luck! Adding a third fit to their stable, Left Field’s Charles Atlas fit models itself after the bodybuilder of the same name and the taper needed to suit his buff physique.

In the 1950s, Atlas rose to fame for “Manufacturing skinny weaklings into real MEN!” Such a manly shape, however, requires a little bit more room around the top block. Some guys, however, still want that tight taper that only comes on the thigh-crushers. That’s where LF’s Charles Atlas fit steps in.

The jean is currently available for pre-order in two different fabrics:  your standard 13oz. Cone Mills redline selvedge ($180) as well as a 14oz. stretch selvedge from Japan’s Collect Mills ($220 and pictured above).

This is the first stretch denim for Left Field, according to brand founder Christian McCann, “It’s very hard to find a stretch denim in a weight above 11 oz and especially one that doesn’t have a sheen to it, so we are hoping we have found a perfect solution for our classic denim fans that need a little mobility.”

And although it’s a pre-order, both jeans are expected to deliver by June 15th. You can find the Cone and the Collect models on Left Field’s website.

Choctaw Ridge – American Made Undergarments from Left Field NYC

In her 1967 song Ode to Billy Joe, Bobbie Gentry claims that it “Seems like nothin’ ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge”. I’d have to disagree. Besides being the place where “Billy Joe MacAllister’s jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge”, Choctaw Ridge is also an old-world men’s undergarment company run by the same guys behind Left Field NYC and it’s definitely something good.

Besides the song, founder Christian McCann was inspired by vintage underwear boxes from the 1940s, which had full color illustrations of men using the product (while often puffing a smoke). He sought to recreate the same garments those boxes used to hold, but updated for today’s guy.

According to Christian, they’ve gone to every length to create a product that stands above the rest of the field:

The boxers were slimmed down in the thigh and inseam shortened so that they don’t balloon up under tight jeans or chinos. Many of the boxers are made out of fine Japanese shirting, with bone buttons. T-shirts are made from supima/modal super soft jersey, the boxer briefs are supimal/modal 1×1 rib with bone buttons and have been described as having your ball on clouds.

And everything is all made in the States, including the letter-pressed boxes, die-cut hang tags, and even the tissue paper wrapping around every piece.

Aside from the underwear and undershirts, Choctaw also produces swimwear ala Live and Let Die era James Bond, which comes in a 60/40 cotton/nylon blend with contrast piping and rubber buttons, as well as chambray lounge pants for those post-denim evenings.

And as anyone familiar with this scene well knows, period accurate details and fine fabrics and construction don’t come cheap and Choctaw Ridge is no exception. Left Field NYC Collect Mills 14 Oz. Dark Grey Heather Chelsea

Never one to rest on their laurels, Left Field NYC unveils the latest addition to their lineup, the Collect Mills Dark Grey Heather Chelsea jean. Weighing in at a mid-weight 14 oz, the denim is sure to be welcomed by those looking for something that’s beyond a more standard indigo jean, suitable for all seasons, and doesn’t sit on the overly light or heavy end of the spectrum.

Taking a finer look at the construction, the Dark Heather Grey is built with a heather grey warp (exterior) and black weft (interior), and finished with tonal stitching and a textured, white-line selvedge ID. In classic form, the leather patch, bandana pockets, and hardware are not only branded with Left Field’s signature insignia and skull logo, but also completely crafted in America.

Featuring a slim-tapered leg, the denim is available in their Chelsea fit and is now up for sale from size 29 through 40 for $240 with a limited batch of seconds (i.e. slightly defective) for $180.

Out of Left Field are some jeans to keep you cool for the rest of the summer. Deadstock and lightweight, LF made a limited quantity of their slim fit Chelsea jean in a neppy 10 oz. Japanese denim as well as a limited quantity of their looser fit Greaser jean in a light blue 10 oz. Japanese denim that brings back memories of Lee jeans from the 70’s.

As always, they’re made with all the Left Field trimming like bandana print pocket bags, skull embossed hardware, and hidden rivets, among other details. You can pick up both right now on Left Field’s site and ride the metaphorical and literal 10oz. cool through the end of the summer.

Fade of the Day – Left Field NYC Black Maria Greaser (2 Years, 4 Washes)

Now, we love indigo. Hopefully that’s evident. What might not be so evident, though, is the fact that we do love us a pair of black jeans. Maybe after today’s Fade of the Day, you’ll share our sentiment.

These Left Field NYC Black Maria jeans were worn for 2 years with 4 washes and make a great case. Worn by Left Field’s resident fit model, Jonny, these jeans were worn hard for 2 years with most of that time spent bar tending. Interestingly, these are so faded that the whiskers have come and gone with scarcely a trace of a whisker. Honey combs are well-defined, but not super thick as is characteristic of heavier denim. And, there are plenty of battle scars at the cuffs as well as at the crotch.

As much as the jean’s name is morbid, our favorite Swiss denimhead would still argue to “keep them living forever.”

Fade of the Day – Left Field Heavy Slub Greaser (5 Months, 4 Soaks)

East Coast meets West Coast in today’s fade as we look at this pair of Left Field jeans worn by reader Shane Brown of Portland, Oregon. In just five months, Brown has managed to heavily fade these jeans by wearing them to work selling jeans (including Left Field) at Lizard Lounge.

Brown sits on the floor a lot at work, hence the back pocket fades, which include a wallet concho hole. The jeans have had no repairs yet, but are likely due for another wash, Brown says. They’ve already come a long way, as evidenced by the subtle slubbiness popping up all over these well-worn jeans.

Fade of the Day – Left Field NYC Green Heather Chelsea (13 Months, 4 Washes)

Today’s fade is brought to you by Christopher Brown from San Antonio, Texas. His Left Field NYC Green Heather Chelsea’s use Cone Mills denim with an indigo warp and green weft which, when faded, give a particular look that only comes from Left Field. Chris wore his jeans while living in England and traveling throughout Western Europe, but most of the wear probably comes from fulfilling his fatherly duties. His keys took a toll on his right-hand pocket, resulting in a nice, albeit discreet, repair. The additional rips in the knee and the back pocket show us how hard he wears his jeans and we love it.

Left Field NYC Collect Mills 14 Oz. Dark Grey Heather Chelsea

Never one to rest on their laurels, Left Field NYC unveils the latest addition to their lineup, the Collect Mills Dark Grey Heather Chelsea jean. Weighing in at a mid-weight 14 oz, the denim is sure to be welcomed by those looking for something that’s beyond a more standard indigo jean, suitable for all seasons, and doesn’t sit on the overly light or heavy end of the spectrum.

Taking a finer look at the construction, the Dark Heather Grey is built with a heather grey warp (exterior) and black weft (interior), and finished with tonal stitching and a textured, white-line selvedge ID. In classic form, the leather patch, bandana pockets, and hardware are not only branded with Left Field’s signature insignia and skull logo, but also completely crafted in America.

Featuring a slim-tapered leg, the denim is available in their Chelsea fit and is now up for sale from size 29 through 40 for $240 with a limited batch of seconds (i.e. slightly defective) for $180.
